Burgon, Geoffrey (1941- )

English composer. He studied with Peter Wishart and Lennox Berkeley at the Guildhall School of Music. His music shows a range of influences, including jazz and medieval French music. He is best known for his themes for successful TV series, including Brideshead Revisited (1981).

opera Hard Times (1991, after Dickens); ballets The Golden Fish (1964), Ophelia (1964), Persephone (1979), The Trial of Prometheus (1988).

Orchestral

Brideshead Variations (1981), The World Again (1983).

Voices and orchestra

Think on Dredful Domesday (1969), Magnificat (1970), Veni Spiritus, Orpheus and Revelations, all for soloists, chorus, and orchestra (1979-84).

Other vocal

Songs of the Creation for chorus and organ (1989), A Vision for tenor and strings (1991); other works for chorus, and for voice and piano or chamber ensemble.
