Burhanpur

Town in Madhya Pradesh state, central India, 442 km/275 mi northeast of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (1991)172,800. Situated on the banks of the River Tapti, close to the border with Maharashtra state, it is a railway junction and a centre for the cotton industry.

During the 16th century, it was the capital of the Deccan province of the Mogul empire and was ceded to the British in 1861.
