Burien

Community in west-central Washington, a residential suburb 16 km/10 mi south of Seattle; population (1990) 25,100. Airlines and their customers constitute an important part of Burien's economy, which is immediately northwest of the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. The community is also a retail centre for other nearby suburbs.

Settled in the 1860s by a German pioneer, it developed from a lumbering to a farming community until it was overtaken by post-war suburbanization. More recently, commercial development has characterized much of the area's growth.
