Burke, William (1792-1829)

Irish murderer. He and his partner William Hare, living in Edinburgh, sold the body of an old man, who had died from natural causes in their lodging house, to an anatomist as a subject for dissection. After that, they increased their supplies by murdering at least 15 people. Burke was hanged on the evidence of Hare. Hare is said to have died a beggar in London in the 1860s.
