Burlington

City in northwestern Vermont, USA, on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain; seat of Chittenden County; population (2000) 38,900. It is a port of entry to the USA; industries include computer parts, steel, marble, lumber, dairy products, and tourism. It is the largest city in Vermont. Burlington was settled in 1773, and incorporated in 1865.

It was a military base during the War of 1812. The American revolutionary Ethan Allen lived here, and the philosopher John Dewey was born here. The Shelburne Museum shows a reconstruction of early American life. Burlington is the seat of several colleges including the University of Vermont (1791), Champlain College (1878), Trinity College (1925), and Burlington College (1972).

Burlington

City in Alamance County, north-central North Carolina, 32 km/20 mi east of Greensboro and 50 km/31 mi northwest of Durham; population (1990) 39,500. Industries include textiles, chemicals, furniture, and agricultural products. It was incorporated in 1866 as Company Shops, and renamed Burlington in 1887.
