Burma War

War 1942-45 during which Burma (now Myanmar) was occupied by Japan. Initially supported by Aung San's Burma National Army, the Japanese captured Rangoon and Mandalay 1942, forcing the withdrawal of General Alexander's British forces to India. During 1943, Chindit guerrilla resistance was organized and after a year's heavy fighting at Imphal and Kohima, British, Commonwealth, American, and Chinese nationalist troops reopened the ‘Burma Road’ between India and China January 1945. Rangoon was recaptured May 1945.
