Burnet, Gilbert

Burnet, Gilbert (1643-1715)

English historian and bishop, author of History of His Own Time 1723-34. His Whig views having brought him into disfavour, he retired to the Netherlands on the accession of James II and became the confidential adviser of William of Orange, with whom he sailed to England 1688. He was appointed bishop of Salisbury 1689.
