Burnet, John (1863-1928)

Scottish scholar of ancient Greek. His publications include a critical edition (Oxford) of Plato's works (1900-13) which became the standard edition of its time.

Burnet was born in Edinburgh and studied there and at Oxford. In 1891 he was appointed professor of Greek at St Andrew's University, and remained there until his retirement in 1926.

Other publications include The Nichomachean Ethics of Aristotle (1900), Plato's Phaedo (1911), Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito (1924), Greek Philosophy: Part I, Thales to Plato (1914), and Higher Education and the War (1917).
