Burnett, Charles

Burnett, Charles (1944- )

US film scriptwriter and director. His Killer of Sheep (1977) launched his career as a leading black American independent film-maker. He continued to make critically acclaimed films, but To Sleep With Anger (1990) was his first film to reach a wider audience.

He was born in Mississippi and brought up in Los Angeles, where he attended the film school at the University of California. Often working at odd jobs to support his family, he received numerous grants, including a MacArthur Foundation ‘genius’ fellowship.
