Burns

City and administrative headquarters of Harney County, east-central Oregon, 378 km/235 mi southeast of Portland; population (2000) 3,100. It is a road and rail centre for an extensive high desert area. The Burns Indian Reservation (Paiute, population (1990) 200) is here.

Malheur and Harney lakes to the south are major waterfowl stops, and the Malheur Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a noted birdwatching area.

Burns motioned to sit down, dropped into one of the swivel-chairs round the table, and kept his eyes on me as persistently as ever, and with that strange air as if all this were make-believe and he expected me to get up, burst into a laugh, slap him on the back, and vanish from the cabin.
When I returned to my seat, that lady was just delivering an order of which I did not catch the import; but Burns immediately left the class, and going into the small inner room where the books were kept, returned in half a minute, carrying in her hand a bundle of twigs tied together at one end.
The nut burns with a fitful bluish flame, and the oil that it contains is exhausted in about ten minutes.
