Burns, Terence (1944– )

British economist. A monetarist, he was director of the London Business School for Economic Forecasting 1976–79, chief economic adviser to the Conservative government 1980–91, and permanent secretary to HM Treasury 1991–98. He has since been chair of the National Lottery 1999–2000, Abbey National Bank from 2002, and Marks & Spencer Group from 2006. He was knighted in 1983 and appointed a life peer in 1998.
