Burray

One of the Orkney Islands, Scotland, covering an area 4 km/2.5 mi long and 3 km/2 mi wide; population (2001) 360. It lies between South Ronaldsay and Mainland, the three islands being linked by the Orkney Causeway (or Churchill Barrier), built in World War II to enclose the eastern end of Scapa Flow. Agriculture is the main activity.

In 1943 a chapel was created from a Nissen hut by Italian prisoners of war on Lambholm, an island on the causeway between Burray and Mainland. This Italian Chapel, which has an unusual trompe l'oeil (‘eye-deceiving’) interior, was restored in 1960 and is in regular use.
