Burrus, Sextus Afranius (died 63 BC)

Roman born in Gaul, appointed praetorian prefect by the emperor Claudius AD 52. He was joint tutor to Nero with the philosopher and dramatist Lucius Annaeus Seneca. He helped to secure Nero's accession AD 54 and had much influence during his early reign, but he later lost favour with the emperor and died AD 63, allegedly poisoned by Nero.
