ragweed

Annual plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia in the Compositae family, common on roadsides and waste ground throughout North America. It grows to 150 cm/5 ft in height and has long spikes of yellow-green flowers; the great ragweed A. trifida grows to 240 cm/8 ft. Both are wind-pollinated; they produce large quantities of pollen and are a major cause of hay fever.

In dry times, water is piped into the pen to irrigate foliage that pronghorn favor, including shrubs like bursage, chain fruit cholla and mesquite pods.
These include the boojum and elephant trees, a bursage with fruits more like a cactus, and such real cacti as the sour pitahaya and cardon.
Much of the native vegetation that pronghorn graze, such as dune bursage, mistletoe, and mesquite leaves, is fading away at an accelerated pace, giving way to parched earth and scrub.
