Buru

Island in the Maluku archipelago of Indonesia, lying between the Seram and Banda Seas; area 9,583 sq km/3,700 sq mi; population (1997) 105,200. Buru is mountainous, with marshy coasts, a forested interior, and some tropical savannah. Exports include teak and cajeput oil. The main town is Namlea.

The "Epilogue" focuses on his exile to Buru, his memoir Nyanyi Sunyi Seorang Bisu (1995), and Indonesia's modern history.
He spent most of the Suharto era behind bars without trial, including fourteen years at the Buru Island Prison Colony.
