Bury, John Bagnell (1861–1927)

Irish historian and classical scholar. His main work was the monumental History of the Later Roman Empire 1889, written when he was only 28 years old.

Bury was born in County Monaghan, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He became professor of modern history (1893–1902) and of Greek (1899–1902) at Dublin, and was later appointed regius professor of modern history at Cambridge. His other works include major histories of Greece and Rome, as well as critical editions of the works of the Greek poet Pindar and the classical historian Edward Gibbon.
