Bushnell, David

Bushnell, David (c. 1742-1824)

US inventor and physician. He built the first American submarine, Bushnell's Turtle, which was tried unsuccessfully against British ships. He taught and practised medicine in Georgia.

He was born in Saybrook, Connecticut, and was a graduate of Yale. He was a Continental Army engineer 1779-83, and spent several years in France.
