Buskerud

County of southeastern Norway; area 14,855 sq km/5,736 sq mi; population (1995) 229,400. The rivers Lågen and Drammen flow through Buskerud into Oslofjord. There are mountains and lakes in the northeast, but the east of the county is chiefly agricultural; fruit and corn are grown. Paper and pulp mills are the main industries along the Drammen. The principal town, which stands on the river, is also called Drammen.

The town of Kongsberg on the Lågen, in the Numedal valley, grew up around silver mines dug in the 17th century. The mines closed 1958, and the town is now a tourist centre.
