butane

Alkane (saturated hydrocarbon) derived from natural gas and as a product of the fractional distillation of crude oil (unrefined petroleum). Liquefied under pressure, it is used as a fuel for industrial and domestic purposes (for example, in portable cookers).

The LPG hydrocarbons - particularly the butanes and a related chemical called butene - create problems because they are reactive molecules that help form ozone, the principal component of smog.
To accommodate the additional volumes, Enterprise recently increased Mont Belvieu's capacity to fractionate mixed butanes by 20 MBPD.
