Butler, Joseph (1692–1752)

English priest and theologian who became dean of St Paul's in 1740 and bishop of Durham in 1750; his Analogy of Religion 1736 argued that it is no more rational to accept deism (arguing for God as the first cause) than revealed religion (not arrived at by reasoning).
