Butler County

Country in southwestern Ohio, bounded to the west by Indiana and intersected by the Great Miami River; area 1,217 sq km/470 sq mi; population (1990) 291,500. Its capital is Hamilton. Middletown and Hamilton are manufacturing cities; the rest of the county is agricultural (dairy, grain, livestock, poultry, and tobacco). Limestone quarrying is also important.

County in western Pennsylvania, on the Allegheny Plateau; area 2,044 sq km/789 sq mi; population (1990) 152,000. Its capital and largest city is Butler. An industrial and coalmining area, the county produces steel, gas, limestone, and chemicals.
