Butt, Isaac (1813–1879)

Irish Protestant lawyer who founded the idea of home rule for Ireland. He became a lawyer 1838 and Tory MP for Youghal 1851, and defended Fenian prisoners from 1865–69. He was converted to nationalism and popularized the slogan ‘home rule’, founding the Home Government Association (Home Rule League) 1870 and leading it until 1878.
