Buttevant

Ancient market town in County Cork, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,670. Buttevant is situated halfway between the cities of Cork and Limerick, beside the River Awbeg. The horse fair of Cahirmee has been held here since ancient times.

Buttevant has the remains of a 13th-century Franciscan abbey and also Ballybeg Abbey and Barry's Castle. Nearby is the ruin of Kilcolman Castle, where the poet Edmund Spenser wrote part of The Faerie Queene.

The word ‘steeplechase’ originated in a horse race between Buttevant and Doneraile church steeples (7 km/4 mi) in 1752.
