Butuan

Capital of Agusan del Norte province on Mindanao Island in the Philippines, situated near the mouth of the Agusan River; population (1995) 247,100. It is an important port with connections to the Visayan Islands. Timber and oil storage are its main economic activities.

In 1996 archaeologists discovered a balangay (sea-going outrigger boat) thought to be over 1,000 years old, adding support to the claim that Butuan is the site of the oldest human settlement in the Philippines.
