Bye, A E

    0.06 sec.

Bye, A E (Arthur Edwin) (1919– )

Dutch-born US landscape architect who was brought to America in 1920. He is particularly known for his use of native flora and his respect for elements in the local natural landscape. His single most notable work is Gainesway Farm, Lexington, Kentucky 1974–86.

He was born in Arnhem, Holland, the son of an American art curator and a mother with Dutch family ties. Raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, he attended Pennsylvania State College (now University) and worked for the US Forest Service and National Park Service 1942–45. Much of his early work was for universities, corporations, and institutions; in later years he did more private estate work, including several projects along the Atlantic coast. Drawing on the English Landscape tradition, he designed in a style that is distinctly modern in its composition by means of abstraction, and in its relationships between structures and sites. He taught at various institutions, including Columbia University (1952–74) and was a visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University (1981).
