Byrnes, Robert Francis

Byrnes, Robert Francis (1917– )

US Slavic studies specialist and educator. Known for his work on conservatism in modern Europe and anti-Semitism in modern France, he was president of the American Association of Advanced Slavic Studies 1978–79, and author of numerous books and articles.

He was born in Waterville, New York. He taught for a long time at Rutgers where he was director of the Russian and East European Institute 1971–76. He served concurrently as a distinguished professor of history at Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1967. He was a consultant for the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1964.
