Byron

City in northwestern Illinois, on the Rock River, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Rockford; population (1990) 2,300. A nuclear power plant was opened here in 1985.

The village of Stillman Valley (population (1990) 800), to the east, was the site of an American Indian victory in the Black Hawk War (1832). Byron was active in the Underground Railroad.
