Bytom

Mining town in Katowice province, Poland, 13 km/8 mi northwest of Katowice; population (2002) 193,500. The district is a large source of coal, lead, and zinc, mined since medieval times, and has engineering industries. Formerly in Upper Silesia, Bytom remained German after the plebiscite of 1921 but was incorporated with Poland 1945.
