Cáceres

Capital of the province of Cáceres, western Spain; population (2001) 82,700. Built on a hill, the old part of the town, surrounded by Roman and Moorish walls, is preserved as a national monument. It has many churches and towers, and medieval and Renaissance mansions. Products include textiles, soap, olive oil, and leather goods, and agriculture is important.
