Cánovas del Castillo, Antonio (1828–1897)

Spanish politician and chief architect of the political system known as the turno politico through which his own Conservative party, and that of the Liberals under Práxedes Sagasta, alternated in power. Elections were rigged to ensure the appropriate majorities. Cánovas was assassinated 1897 by anarchists.
