All five C clefs were formerly used; the baritone F clef is often substituted for the last.

In music, the clef, derived from an ornamental letter C, which indicates that the line on which it is placed represents middle C. Only two C clefs are in use today: the alto, for the viola, and the tenor, for the tenor trombone and the upper register of the bassoon, cello, and double bass.
