Colac

Town in Victoria, Australia, 153 km/95 mi southwest of Melbourne; population (1996) 9,793. Colac is the centre of an agricultural and dairying area known as the Western District. It has an industrial base, and products include timber and meat.

A recently completed survey of 1,000 children in the country town of Colac, in Victoria, showed that 27% of the primary-school students were overweight or obese.
``Last year there was a lot of hope because the redeployment (from Bethlehem) was so close to Christmas,'' said Stephanie Tashkoff, a 29-year-old from Colac, Australia, who has spent almost two years in the area.
