Cape Finisterre

Atlantic cape on the northwest coast of Spain, in the province of La Coruña. It is the most westerly point in Spain, and its lighthouse is visible to vessels from a distance of 80 km/50 mi.

In a naval engagement off Finisterre in 1747, Lord Anson captured twelve French men-of-war and six other vessels. In the same year, Rear-Admiral Hawke took six French men-of-war, and in 1805 Calderan Strahan defeated the French and Spaniards here.
