Cabo Rojo

Cabo Rojo

Community in southwestern Puerto Rico, 13 km/8 mi south of Mayagüez; population (1990) 10,100. Sited in Cabo Rojo Municipio (population (1990) 38,500), Cabo Rojo is a largely agricultural centre, producing sugarcane, tobacco, and coffee. Tourism is also important.

An early smuggling centre, it is named after the red cliffs at Cabo Rojo, 18 km/11 mi south-southwest, at Puerto Rico's southwestern corner.
