Cáceres

Capital of the province of Cáceres, western Spain; population (2001) 82,700. Built on a hill, the old part of the town, surrounded by Roman and Moorish walls, is preserved as a national monument. It has many churches and towers, and medieval and Renaissance mansions. Products include textiles, soap, olive oil, and leather goods, and agriculture is important.

Province of western Spain in Extremadura autonomous community; area 19,961 sq km/7,707 sq mi; population (1995 est) 424,900. Bordered on the west by Portugal, it lies largely in the basin of the River Tagus. Products include wool, oil, ham, and red sausages (embutidos). The capital is Cáceres.
