Cagayan

Large province of the extreme north of Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 9,000 sq km/3,475 sq mi; population (1995) 895,000. The capital is Tuguegarao. Cagayan is extremely fertile, with rice (the staple food) and tobacco being the chief crops.

The River Cagayan, the largest on Luzon, flows through the province, and is used to transport logs from the Cagayan valley. The Tanlogan waterfalls and Callao caves attract tourists. The province is home to the Ita (Negrito) people.
