Cagliostro, Alessandro di, Count Cagliostro (1743–1795)

Italian adventurer, swindler, and specialist in the occult, born in Palermo. In Paris in 1785 he was involved in the affair of the diamond necklace – obtained by a band of swindlers supposedly on behalf of Marie Antoinette, dismantled and sold – and was imprisoned in the Bastille. Later arrested by the Inquisition in Rome, he died in the fortress of San Leone.
