Caguas

Community in east-central Puerto Rico, 26 km/16 mi south-southeast of San Juan; population (2000 est) 88,700. Sited in Caguas Municipio (population (2000 est) 140,500), it is now the largest urban centre in Puerto Rico's interior, a centre for sugar and alcohol refining and for manufacturing, including the making of clothing, electronic devices, and furniture, glass, and plastics. Caguas is also the trade and distribution centre for the fertile Turabo Valley, which produces sugarcane, tobacco, fruit, and livestock.

Caguas was founded as a colonial settlement by the Spanish in 1775. It is located on the San Juan-Ponce highway and the railroad. It is the home of the Universidad del Turabo and Columbia College.
