Caherciveen

Market town in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland, near Kells Bay; population (2002) 8,800. Caherciveen is situated on the Iveragh Peninsula, halfway round the famous Ring of Kerry scenic route. The main industry is sock manufacture. A bridge near Caherciveen links Valentia Island to the mainland.

The town itself dates from the early 19th century, but there are many ancient ruins in the surrounding area, including Leacanabuaile Fort, a prehistoric Bronze Age settlement. Caherciveen initially derived much of its wealth from flour mills.

Carhan, near Caherciveen, was the birthplace of the Irish lawyer and politician Daniel O'Connell; the O'Connell Memorial Church was built in 1888. The old Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) barracks in the town now houses Caherciveen Heritage Centre.
