Cahokia

Town in St Clair County, southwestern Illinois, USA, on the Mississippi River opposite St Louis, Missouri, 6 km/4 mi southwest of East St Louis; population (1990) 17,550. It is a residential suburb.

One of the first permanent European settlements in Illinois, Cahokia was founded by French missionaries in 1699. It was the centre of French influence in the Upper Mississippi Valley until Britain took over in 1765. A British trader bribed a Peoria warrior to murder the Ottawa chief Pontiac here in 1769. George Rogers Clark captured Cahokia for the USA in 1778.

Among its historic sites are the Cahokia Courthouse (1740), one of the Midwest's oldest extant buildings; the Holy Family Catholic church (1799), a National Historic Landmark; and the Jarrot Mansion (1799–1806), probably the oldest brick structure in the region. Cahokia is 11 km/7 mi southwest of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Park.
