Cairns

Seaport and resort in northeast Queensland, Australia, 1,733 km/1,077 mi north of Brisbane; population (1996) 92,273. Cairns is the administrative centre for North Queensland, and grazing is an important industry. Sugar, timber, fish, and agricultural produce are exported. Cairns is a centre for tours to the Great Barrier Reef.

Cairns is a base for the exploration of the Daintree rainforest and hinterland. It has a marina and wharves used by visiting yachts, liners, and tour boats.
