Caitanya (1486–1533)

Principal leader in Bengal of the bhakti movement which revitalized medieval Hinduism. He inspired a mass movement of devotion for Krishna, especially through sankirtan, public singing of the name of God accompanied by dancing and musical instruments. (The modern Hare Krishna movement is descended from Caitanya.)
