Calas, Jean

    0.02 sec.

Calas, Jean (1698-1762)

French Protestant, executed in 1762 for allegedly murdering his son to prevent his conversion to Catholicism.

His widow escaped to Switzerland and, aided by the writer Voltaire who led a campaign for religious toleration and legal reform, succeeded in getting the trial reviewed, proving Calas' innocence.
