Randolph Caldecott's illustration of the nursery rhyme ‘Hey, Diddle Diddle’ shows one aspect of his work, although in his lifetime he was as well known for his satirical drawings and caricatures. Each year since 1938, the ‘artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children’ has received a prize called the Caldecott Award.
