Caldwell, Philip

Caldwell, Philip (1920– )

US executive. He had a long career at Ford Motor Company starting from 1953 and was the first non-Ford family member to lead the company. He served as president 1978–80, and then as CEO from 1979 and chairman from 1980 until his retirement from Ford in 1985.

He was born in Bourneville, Ohio. At Ford he variously headed truck operations, the Philco division, and international operations. He was also managing director at Lehman Brothers (and its predecessor Shearson Lehman) 1985–98.
