Caldwell, Sarah (1924–2006)

US opera conductor, director, and producer. Known for her versatility and innovative variations to classical operas, in 1976 she became the first woman conductor at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, conducting La Traviata.

She staged her first opera while a student at Tanglewood, founded the Opera Company of Boston in 1957, and gave the first US performances of War and Peace, Moses und Aron (as producer), Benvenuto Cellini, and the original versions of Boris Godunov and Don Carlos. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
