sanderling

Small wader Calidris alba, family Scolopacidae, order Charadriiformes, about 20 cm/8 in long. Its summer plumage is a speckled chestnut on the upper parts, head, and chest, with white underneath. In winter it is mainly white with light grey underparts. It stays on its breeding grounds in arctic America, Siberia, and Greenland for about six weeks, after which it migrates south to the coasts of all the continents.
