Calisto, La

Opera by Pietro Cavalli (libretto by G Faustini, after Ovid's Metamorphoses), first produced at the Teatro Sant' Apollinare, Venice, Italy, in 1651. It is known today in a free realization by Raymond Leppard (Glyndebourne, 26 May 1970), and in editions by Paul Daniel and René Jacobs. In the plot Jupiter assumes the identity of Diana in order to seduce the soprano Calisto.
