Calistoga

City in Napa County, northwestern California, USA, near the head (to the northwest) of the Napa Valley, on the Silverado Trail, 21 km/13 mi northeast of Santa Rosa; population (1990) 4,500. Calistoga is noted for its vineyards and wineries, also produces prunes and walnuts, and is a tourist centre.

Established in the 1860s as a health resort with mudbaths, geysers, and hot springs, it was named with reference to Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1880, Robert Louis Stevenson honeymooned at the former Silverado Mine, at 1,325 m/4,343 ft Mount St Helena, about 13 km/8 mi to the north; the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park commemorates the stay, about which he wrote. The Old Faithful Geyser of California is just northwest of the city.
