Callan

Market town in County Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland, 16 km/10 mi southwest of Kilkenny town; population (2002) 1,300. It has many ancient monuments and ruins, among them a 15th-century Augustinian friary and the remains of a castle attacked by Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1650.

Callan is named after a High King of Ireland, Niall Caille. The king arrived in Callan in 844 during a war with the Vikings. He is buried in Kilree a few miles away. The town was granted a charter by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, in 1217.

Callan was the birthplace of the architect James Hoban, who designed the White House in Washington, DC, and Irish journalist and poet John Locke. Features include the 12th-century St Mary's Church and a memorial to Irish philanthropist and educator Edmund Rice who was born in the nearby village of Westport.
